I toiled in the fields with all of my will
And many a year, the good earth I tilled
But the seasons are changing, the sun’s going down
In the next spring planting, you will take the plow
I’m sorry to leave you a world full of strife
Could I have done better and gave more to life
Well they say trees are known by the fruit that they bear
In the garden of time, I did my best to take care
On the edge of darkness, in the stillness of night
While the world was sleeping, I kept up the fight
All I’ve said and done, does it matter anyhow?
For my time is passing
And it’s your world now
I want you to be a sower of seed
When all have lost hope, I want you to believe
That there’s goodness abiding in the spirit of man
And with our native wisdom, you can heal this land
I know you can’t hear me, I’m part of the noise
A gray generation, a tired old choice
You don’t want to listen, but one day you will
Remember these words and your heart will be filled
On the edge of darkness...
The home of my childhood, the landmarks I knew,
The freight trains, the ball fields faded into the blue
But the words of my father still rings proud and true
My son, be a man in whatever you do
We walked in these fields a long time ago
Of the legacy I leave you, this you should know
That I stood against power, I stood against the guns
In the spirit of peace and I never did run
on the edge of darkness...
