Whenever there’s a war i gotta protest it
I go downtown, I get arrested,
Some people never understood
That going to jail made Thoreau feel good
Let’s pick up a banner, carry a sign,
Trespass over the forbidden line,
Be non-violent, polite and charming--
The man with badge gives the final warning
The cops they’re twirling leather lariats,
Repressing the proletariat
With tear gas, tazers, and black batons
I think they even got napalm
If you wanna keep up your spiritual fitness
Got to go downtown and bear some witness
Can’t make peace without the main ingredient
When they beat the drums, don’t agonize
Never compromise, organize
Civil disobedience
Well, I chained myself to the pentagon
Dug up graves on the white house lawn
Turned myself into a human barrier
Hammered on missles on aircraft carriers
Went in front of the federal judge,
A mean old bastard, he held a grudge
He said, you got to pay a fine,
I said, no thanks I’ll do the time
Got ninety days, sixty probated
The prosecutor was elated
Gotta spend some time in the federal pen
Won’t you come and see me now and then?
if you wanna...
If we want to end war and get ourselves free
We gotta hang together listen to me
In america you exercise your rights
Even if those handcuffs are tight
If you wanna be like Martin Luther King,
Gandhi and Jesus, do this thing
We can be good americans
Just like those brothers berrigan
Tell those armies all around
You’re being used, so just sit down
Time to make the warmakers sore
And raise those guns no more
if you wanna...
